Painless Dentistry
Most of the people feel uncomfortable or afraid during dental treatment. Painless dentistry or sedation dentistry is one of the best options for patients who have a fear of dental procedures, needles, individuals with severe gagging problem, sensitive teeth or difficulty of numbers after local anaesthesia.
Painless dentistry provides anxiety free & pain-free dentistry as patients are in deeply relaxed. State though fully responsive. Painless dentistry gives the opportunity to effectuate multiple or dental procedures in a single visit, minimising the anxiety that patients usually feel before visiting their Dentist.
Four different methods are used in Painless Dentistry:
Orally Administered Sedation: Orally administered sedation is also known as an oral sedative. It is applied by taking liquid or pills. It is usually given to the patient a night before the dental procedure is done, or at least 30 minutes to an hour before the surgery based on the level of anxiety the patient has.
All body functions of the patient remain normal, and the patient can breathe on their own. Experiencing little amnesia during the procedure is common, and the patient may also fall asleep. The level of sedation for each person is unpredictable, which can be a disadvantage caused by oral sedatives. Oral sedatives usually do not harm, unless the patient is allergic to certain drugs.
Intravenous sedation: Intravenous sedation like oral sedatives also known as “Deep conscious sedation”. Usually, it is used by dentist & oral surgeons who have specialised training and special certificate by the state Board of dentistry.
With intravenous sedation, medicines are directly injected into the patient’s blood stream. IV sedation is considered safe and the main advantage is that if the sedation is not enough, more medication is safe to be administered and the effects are immediate.
Drugs given by IV route are more effective than drugs given by oral route. In this type of sedation dentistry, the patient mostly remains awake and also responds to the doctor’s commands.
Nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) sedation: Nitrous oxide gas in sedation dentistry, is also known as laughing gas. It is used to bring the patient into a state of relaxation, to eliminate pain. One could administer local anaesthesia in combination with nitrous oxide gas. Laughing gas is the most used sedation method for dental procedures.
In this state, the person can breathe, and all body functions remain normal. With laughing gas, the patient falls asleep and experiences slight amnesia during the surgery. This method of sedation is best for an uncooperative child patient.
General Anesthesia: Under general anaesthesia, patients completely fall asleep during surgery. General anaesthesia makes patient pain free, immobile, unaware of things happening around them for time spent under anaesthesia. As under G.A patients are in an unconscious state, there’s no need to give local anaesthesia for pain relief.
